Mickey's Christmas Carol
Written by Diana Saenger

mickeyschristmascarol2-200.jpgWhat could be more fun for kids than to spend the holidays with Mickey Mouse and his friends while revisiting Mickey's Christmas Carol? Walt Disney Home Video continues their animated classic line with Volume 7, Mickey's Christmas Carol DVD. And don't think it's too early - check that calendar again! The collection includes Mickey's Christmas Carol, The Small One, Pluto's Christmas Tree and Santa's Workshop.

Kids of all ages will enjoy watching these classic cartoons each one a special treasure in its own right.

mickeyschristmascarol200.jpgThe 1983 Mickey's Christmas Carol, Disney's own adaptation of Charles Dickens classic story, is a great introduction for young kids to this classic tale. The music starts immediately and sets a festive mood while credits role against a background of classic hand-drawn Disney characters. Uncle Scrooge (voiced by Alan Young) is the perfect fit for whom else but Ebenezer Scrooge. In the first moment of the story we learn that his dead partner left money for his burial but Scrooge had him buried at sea instead. What a Scrooge! Donald Duck plays Scrooge's nephew Fred (voiced by Clarence Nash) who invites him to Christmas Day dinner, which he refuses. Mickey is the stuttering and timid but very loyal Bob Cratchett (voiced by Wayne Allwine) who has to plea for time off on Christmas Day. And when Scrooge goes home - the ghosts arrive to teach him a lesson. Goofy (voiced by Hal Smith) plays Jacob Marley, Jiminy Cricket (voiced by Eddie Carroll) the Ghost of Christmas Past, and Willie the Giant (voiced by Will Ryan) the Ghost of Christmas Present. The film looks stunning, and the story is fun and of course, still imparts a great message, which Scrooge learns when he makes Cratchett's life better, especially for Tiny Tim (voiced by Dick Billingsley). Mickey's Christmas Carol is directed by Burny Mattison.

the_small_one200.jpgThe Small One, released in 1979, is about a Judean boy (voiced by Sean Marshall) who loves his donkey, which he calls The Small One, like his best friend. They play games around the barn until they are both too tired to move. His father (voiced by Olan Soule) gathers wood to sell and uses the donkey's to transport it. When his father tells him The Small One eats more than he's worth, and they must sell him, the boy is sad. He talks his Dad into letting him be the one to take him to town and sell him to someone special. When they come across the Tanner (voiced by William Woodson) who only wants his hide, the boy and the donkey flee with fear. There's a funny song about money and the sellers while the boy tries to find the suitable buyer. Then he takes him to an auction where the auctioneer (voiced by Hal Smith) drives a hard bargain. But the boy doesn't like the way he treats the donkey so they leave. Things look bleak until a nice man buys the donkey to carry his wife to Bethlehem. The boy is happy because he knows the donkey will be in good hands. This is a charming story that gently touches on the real reason for the season. The Small One is directed by Don Bulth.

plutoschristmastree-mickey-200.jpgplutoschristmastree200.jpgIn the 1952 cartoon Pluto's Christmas Tree Mickey (voiced by Edward Brophy) and Pluto (voiced by Pinto Colvig) set out to find a Christmas Tree and encounter a few obstacles in the forest more than a lot of snow. Chip and Dale, a couple of mischievous chipmunks happen to be in the tree Mickey and Pluto take home and chaos ensues. Will this truly be a merry Christmas for all? This is a beautiful illustrated cartoon the kids will enjoy over and over. The cartoon is directed by Jack Hannah.

In the delightful 1932 Santa's Workshop, directed by Wilford Jackson, the cartoon opens with festive music by the Silly Symphony. The story is all about what goes on in Santa's workshop as merry elves (and toys), sing and dance and get the sled loaded with toys. Kids will laugh as Santa reads letters from the kids, some that rhyme. The Technicolor is fantastic.

The DVD also includes previews of the newly released and restored Snow White, as well as peeks of The Princess and the Frog, Santa Buddies, TinkerBell and The Lost Treasure, Up, Winnie the Pooh Season of Giving, G-Force, Ponyo, Mickey's Choo Choo Express, Wizards of Waverly Place the Movie.
