TOP 10 Classic Jimmy Stewart Films

He's been called the Best Classic Actor of the 20th Century, and many of James "Jimmy" Stewart's performances in film appear on the top film lists of all times. The Classic Movie readers answered the call for their favorite TOP 10 Jimmy Stewart films and here are their picks. Interestingly, The Philadelphia Story, the only film that garnered Stewart an Academy Award for Best Actor, didn't rank as high as these films to his fans that offered their picks.  1) Harvey (1950)

harvey.jpgA very funny film and one of Stewart's fan's favorites. He plays Elwood, an affable but somewhat tipsy guy who talks constantly to Harvey, his faithful companion, a 6-foot 3-1/2 inch rabbit that only he can see, which results in some hilarious situations. Stewart was nominated for Best Actor Academy Award.

2) Rear Window (1954)

When photographer L.B. Jefferies (Jimmy Stewart) suffers a broken leg in his apartment he becomes bored and eventually is drawn to the window where he gets hooked on watching his neighbors. When something unexplainable happens L.B. has no choice but to react.

3) It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

A dejected George Bailey (Stewart) feels a bitter disappointment that the business left him by his deceased father isn't doing well. As he stands at a bridge thinking his life is over, Angels discuss his plight. Stewart was nominated for Best Actor Academy Award.

4) Broken Arrow (1950)

A cavalry scout (Stewart) befriends an Apache chief Cochise (Jeff Chandler) in hopes of heading off an Indian war. Debra Paget's beauty stands out in the romance subplot.

5) The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962)

Stewart plays Senator Ransom Stoddard who returns home for the funeral of his friend (John Wayne). The movie goes into a flash back where interesting elements of the men's relationships unfold.

6) Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (1939)

A young naïve legislator (Stewart) is railroaded into congress to the bidding of a prominent senator, only to learn about his ploy to pander to graft and gallantly rise above it. Stewart was nominated for Best Actor Academy Award.

7) The Glenn Miller Story (1953)

Stewart plays the legendary band leader in a biography that includes Miller's death in a World War II airplane crash. Great Big Band music.

8) Flight of The Phoenix (1965)

A small plane carrying oil workers and military personnel crashes in the Sahara Desert. A survival of the fittest with conflicts between the passengers.

9) Vertigo (1958)

Alfred Hitchcock's unforgettable and psychologically complex story of deception, madness, and death. Stewart is a detective suffering from a fear of heights.

10) The Spirit of St.Louis (1957)

A biographical look at Charles Lindbergh (Stewart) with elements of his life regarding the air force, barnstorming, and some of his early life.
