TOP 10 Classic Gregory Peck Films
Written by Diana Saenger
He was an amazing actor and a major screen idol in feature films from 1944 to 1998. So many films, it’s hard to say what was Gregory Peck’s best. Some like his romantic side, others his gallantry and still others his ability to make a convincing character and take command of the screen. I recently asked the Classic Movie readers to choose their TOP 10 Gregory Peck films. Here are their choices, and thanks to those who participated.

 1) TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (1962)

mockingbird.jpgOne of the most talked about films for centuries, "Mockingbird" was based on Harper Lee's 1960 Pulitzer Prize-winning book of 1960 and is seen through the eyes of a little girl. Gregory Peck gave an Oscar-winning performance as Atticus Finch, a lawyer in a racially divided Alabama town in the 1930s who defends a black man accused of raping a white woman. Director Alan J. Pakula was fantastic at making all the actors seem so real. The film was nominated for eight Academy Awards and won three.

2) MOBY DICK (1956)

In this classic story by Herman Melville, Captain Ahab (Gregory Peck) has an obsession with a huge whale he calls Moby Dick. Ahab has a long history with Moby Dick, whom years earlier took Ahab's leg, leaving him to do his business on a peg leg. Now Ahab wants revenge - he wants to kill the whale. Will he sacrifice everything, including his life, the lives of his crewmembers, and even his ship to find and destroy his nemesis?

3) TWELVE O'CLOCK HIGH (1949)

A somewhat depressing tale about an American Bomber Group low on morale due to their heavy losses in the skies over Germany. General Frank Savage (Peck) arrives to relieve the Bomber Commander and finds resistance to his ideas. His challenge is to instill pride in the pilots and make the Army Air Corps proud as well.

4) ON THE BEACH (1959)

After a nuclear war wipes out humanity in the northern hemisphere, an American submarine hides out in Australia. American Captain Towers (Peck) tries to put his past and the loss of his family behind him. When he meets Moira Davidson, he begins to think he may have found his answer. But then duty calls once again.

5) THE OMEN (1976)

Even in such an odd film as this Peck could show his acting capabilities. He plays an ambassador to the United States who can pull many strings, even substitutes another baby when his wife has a stillborn child. She never knows it, but years later when the child turns out to be a child of Satan, will his father regret his action?

6) THE BIG COUNTRY (1976)

Like the film's tagline says...Big they fought! Big they loved! Big their story! When wealthy sea Captain McKay (Peck) desires to retire in the big west, he meets more than he bargained for in his feisty fiancée (Carroll Baker) and less than likeable ranch foreman (Charlton Heston). Plenty of testosterone in this film!

7) YELLOW SKY (1949)

A band of bank robbers don't know what hit them when they plan to rob an old man who has been mining gold. Love is what hits them when the gang leader, Stretch (Gregory Peck), falls for the miner's granddaughter (Anne Baxter). Will this stop his gang from doing their evil deed?

8) DESIGNING WOMAN (1957)

Directed by Vincent Minnelli, this romantic comedy stars Peck as a sports journalist (Mike), who falls in love with a designer, Marilla (Lauren Bacall), and the two jump into marriage right away. They soon realize maybe they jumped too fast, as they're very different and have different backgrounds. Maybe he should have explained he's on the run from the mob before they got hitched!

9) DUEL IN THE SUN (1946)

Western fans will like this saga about that involves a man hanged for shooting his wife and her lover, a half-breed who goes to live with relatives in Texas, a wheelchair-bound Senator, and a lustful and womanizing young man played by Peck. There's a lot of story in this one.

10) THE YEARLING (1946)

A very heartwarming story about a soldier (Peck) and his wife (Jane Wyman) who become farmers after the Civil War. Haunted by the death of her other children, the wife neglects their 11-year-old son Jody who begs his father for a pet and soon he and his fawn are inseparable.
